Confused?
This is probably your first experience following directions at this level of technicality. When something doesn't work for you in a lesson, the best way to solve your problem is to step backward in the steps to where you last knew everything was working right, and step your document back by pressing Ctrl+Z (I always call it "Control-Zed"). Control Zed is like "Undo" in Microsoft Word. If you go too far back, you can use Control-Shift-Zed to step forwards again.
The more that you learn key strokes, the faster you can work in Illustrator. For example, if you press the "V" key to get the selection tool (if you point the cursor to the tool on the tool bar it will show you the letter shortcut). The ONLY time that you can't use the keyboard to select tools is when you are typing in a text box. Try it.
